The White Oaks Laccoliths

چکیده

About 12 miles to the northeast of Carrizozo lies the “ghost town” of White Oaks. This once thriving mining community rests in a small valley surrounded by three wrinkled and rounded mountain peaks: the remains of a ancient cluster of laccoliths (see attached Figure 1). To the northwest lies Lone Mountain with its associated peak, Baxter Mountain, while to the southeast lies Patos Mountain and the largest structure, Carrizo Mountain (elevation 9650 feet). It is to these structures that White Oaks owed its brief existence, not just for the beautiful setting for what was once called “the liveliest town in the territory,” but more importantly, for the gold and silver commodities which fueled the towns’ economy. To understand this, one must dig a little deeper underground.

Phylogeny and Introgression of California Scrub White Oaks (Quercus section Quercus)

The taxonomy of oaks (Quercus) is always a challenge because many species exhibit variable phenotypes that overlap with other species. The scrub White Oaks of California are no exception. In California, Quercus section Quercus (i.e., White Oaks) includes six species of scrub oaks plus four tree oak species. Field identification utilizes leaf traits and acorns, when available, as well as geograp...

Hydraulic properties and freezing-induced cavitation in sympatric evergreen and deciduous oaks with contrasting habitats

We investigated the hydraulic properties in relation to soil moisture, leaf habit, and phylogenetic lineage of 17 species of oaks ( Quercus ) that occur sympatrically in northern central Florida (USA). Leaf area per shoot increased and Huber values (ratio of sapwood area to leaf area) decreased with increasing soil moisture of species’ habitats. As a result, maximum hydraulic conductance and ma...

Densities of Agrilus auroguttatus and Other Borers in California and Arizona Oaks

We investigated within-tree population density of a new invasive species in southern California, the goldspotted oak borer, Agrilus auroguttatus Schaeffer (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), with respect to host species and the community of other borers present. We measured emergence hole densities of A. auroguttatus and other borers on the lower stem (bole) of naïve oaks at 18 sites in southern Califor...

The Oak (Quercus) Biodiversity of California and Adjacent Regions

Twenty species of oak (Quercus) are known from California. The white oak group is the most diverse, and includes a complex of scrub oak species that are often encountered in chaparral, mixed forest and desert margin habitats. The Protobalanus group (e.g., Quercus chrysolepis) is a unique and distinctive clade of western North American species that appears to be most closely related to the white...

Post-fire recovery of acorn production by four oak species in southern ridge sandhill association in south-central Florida.

We examined post-fire recovery of two components of acorn production (percentage of bearing ramets [stems] and number of acorns per bearing ramet) for four species of oaks in southern ridge sandhill vegetation in south-central peninsular Florida. Annual counts of acorns on two white oaks (Quercus chapmanii and Q. geminata) and two red oaks (Q. laevis and Q. myrtifolia) were conducted annually (...
